Police and Sanctuary Cities

Currently Denver Police in Colorado have stated that they will not participate in immigration enforcement and the LAPD police chief in LA, California will not help deport immigrants under Trump! Will continue to update as more police departments in the country step on board with this. In Boston police are more interested in good relations with their immigrant communities and will not participate. It looks like many cities, their mayors and law enforcement are refusing to participate in any planned mass deportation efforts of immigrants in their communities. A sanctuary city in the US is one that has a policy of not prosecuting a person solely for violating federal immigration law in the country in which he or she lives. Some of these cities are refusing to enforce Trumps deportation efforts. Sanctuary cities in the US that have come on board thus far are LA, Denver, Boston, Providence,  Minneapolis and Chicago. Let’s hope these cities will provide safety for their community members a concern is that they not turn into holding ghettos for deportation after Trump institutes his polices as many people may flock to these cities believing that they will be safe in them.

LAPD Charlie Beck won’t assist with deportation efforts. Trump said he would deport millions of immigrants from the US, he stated that they would be criminal immigrants but he hasn’t defined what criminal means.

Betsy Hodges, the mayor of Minneapolis, spoke out stating that Trumps deportation plans would cause mayhemcause ident-elect’s plan for undocumented workers will cause mayhem. She shared with Global Nation that

“He is placing politics before public safety,” Hodges says. “If President-elect Trump wants to work within the [immigration] systems that already exist for the federal government and local government, that’s one thing. But to do this in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform, to do this in the absence of something that people all across this country want and are clamoring for, to have a piecemeal strategy for a solution that needs an overall strategy.”

On the whole, Hodges says that she rejects things that the president-elect has done and said, and what he stands for.

“This is unique,” she says. “This is a person whose personal behavior, self-admittedly, has been atrocious and illegal. This is somebody who has pledged to attack and go after women and minorities and immigrants and Muslims and people with disabilities, and I could go on. That’s not the America I believe in and that’s not the America I stand for.”

She adds, “I think that mayors all across the country right now are assessing what impact a Trump presidency can and will have on our cities, and are doing our best to prepare for that”

Given that he himself is a self-acknowledged criminal I am hard pressed to envision what a criminal must look like in his mind. I have worked in the criminal justice system and I can assure you I have seen people like Trump who have been rightfully charged as sexual offenders. I can imagine that there are many in law enforcement who are disgusted with what Trump has done and has gotten away with and are biting at the bit to get at him. In correctional facilities sexual predators are on the low end of the food chain.

Good news, we needed some!
